이춘영의 작업은 자연을 향한 오랜 관찰과 경험을 바탕으로 형성되어 왔다. 인도 체류 시기에는 자연을 생명과 시간, 관계가 중첩된 흐름으로 인식하고, 테라코타와 먹 드로잉을 통해 물질과 시간의 흔적을 탐색해왔다. 서로 다른 경험과 매체를 거치며 이어진 작업은 자연과 시간, 관계에 대한 질문을 꾸준히 확장해왔으며, 현재도 그 탐구를 이어가고 있다. 이번 전시《건너가기》는 오랜 시간 이어온 작업의 연장선에 있는 이춘영의 최근 작업을 소개한다. 이전 작업에서 식물과 뿌리 등 자연의 형상이 화면의 중요한 모티프로 드러났다면, 최근 작업에서는 이러한 형상이 점차 화면 속으로 스며들고, 색의 층위와 화면의 구조가 보다 두드러진다. 이를 통해 화면은 특정 식물의 형상을 넘어 자연 전체를 환기하는 공간으로 확장된다. 갤러리 팔조

Lee Choonyoung's practice has been shaped by years of sustained observation of and engagement with nature. During her time in India, she came to perceive nature not as a fixed subject but as a flow in which life, time, and relationships overlap. Through terracotta and ink drawing, she explored the traces of materiality and the passage of time. Across different experiences and mediums, her practice has continued to expand questions surrounding nature, time, and relationships, while carrying that inquiry forward into the present. Crossing presents Lee Choonyoung's recent works as an extension of her long-standing practice. While earlier works more directly revealed motifs drawn from plants and roots, these forms gradually recede in the recent paintings, allowing layers of color and pictorial structure to come to the fore. As a result, the paintings extend beyond the depiction of individual plants to evoke a broader sense of nature. Gallery Palzo

이춘영은 일상의 산책과 관찰을 통해 작업의 태도를 형성해왔다. 어린 시절 화실에서 경험한 작업 공간은 예술을 삶과 분리된 영역이 아니라 하나의 방식으로 인식하게 만든 중요한 계기가 되었다. 이후의 작업 과정은 학교와 제도적 환경 속 경험, 사회적 예술 담론과의 접촉, 그리고 개인적 삶의 전환을 거치며 이어졌다. 이러한 경험들은 작업이 특정 형식에 머무르지 않고 지속적으로 확장되는 기반이 되었다. 특히 인도 체류 경험은 작업 인식의 중요한 전환점이 되었다. 반복적인 산책과 이동 속에서 자연은 더 이상 고정된 대상이 아니라, 생명성과 시간, 관계가 중첩된 흐름의 장으로 인식되었다. 반얀트리 아래의 체류, 낯선 풍경 속 이동, 일상적인 찻집과 밤의 공기 등은 작업 감각의 층위로 축적되었다. 이 경험은 테라코타와 먹 드로잉으로 이어지며 물질과 행위의 언어로 전환되었다. 흙과 먹은 단순한 재료가 아니라, 시간의 흐름과 생명의 흔적을 담아내는 매개로 작동한다. 귀국 이후의 작업은 이전 경험과 단절되지 않은 채 다른 방식으로 지속된다. 드러남과 숨겨짐, 표면과 깊이 사이의 경계는 고정되지 않고 흐름 속에서 변형된다. 현재 작업은 생성과 소멸, 축적과 비움이 반복되는 자연의 리듬과 맞닿아 있으며, 이러한 과정속에서 끊임없이 변형되고 응축되는 상태로 존재한다. 이춘영, 2026

Lee Choonyoung has developed her artistic attitude through everyday walks and sustained observation. Early experiences in her childhood studio played a formative role in understanding art not as a separate realm from life, but as a way of being. Her subsequent practice has unfolded through experiences within academic and institutional contexts, encounters with critical discourse on art, and personal transitions in life. These layers of experience have provided a foundation for her practice to continuously expand beyond fixed forms. A significant turning point came during her time in India. Through repeated walks and movement, nature was no longer perceived as a fixed object, but as a field in which life, time, and relationships overlap. Moments beneath banyan trees, passages through unfamiliar landscapes, and the everyday presence of teahouses and night air accumulated as layers of sensibility within her practice. This experience was later translated into terracotta and ink drawing, becoming a language of material and gesture. Clay and ink are not merely materials, but mediums that carry traces of time and the passage of life. After returning to Korea, her practice has continued without rupture, unfolding in different forms. The boundaries between appearance and disappearance, surface and depth, remain unfixed and are constantly transformed within a state of flow. Her current work is closely aligned with the rhythms of nature—where creation and dissolution, accumulation and emptiness continuously repeat—existing as a condition of ongoing transformation and condensation.
