권혜조 개인전 《SHIFT》

권혜조는 오랫동안 풍경과 일상의 장면을 자신만의 회화 언어로 탐구해 왔다. 공원, 산책길, 스쳐 지나가는 풍경, 잠시 머물렀던 공간들은 그의 작업의 출발점이 되지만, 작가는 특정 장소를 재현하는 데 머물지 않는다. 그가 관심을 두는 것은 장면 자체가 아니라 그 순간이 지나간 뒤에도 마음속에 남아 있는 감각과 기억이다.

최근 작업에서 권혜조는 풍경을 묘사하는 것보다 ‘인식의 순간’에 더욱 집중한다. 빠르게 달리는 차창 밖으로 스쳐 지나가는 장면, 시선의 가장자리에 잠시 머물다 사라지는 형태, 혹은 미처 붙잡기도 전에 흘러가 버리는 빛과 색의 흔적들. 우리는 수많은 장면을 경험하지만 그것을 온전히 인식하는 순간에는 이미 시간이 흘러가 버린 뒤인 경우가 많다.

《SHIFT》는 이러한 시간과 인식의 간극에서 출발한다. 작가는 대상을 명확히 설명하기보다 빠르게 지나간 감각의 흔적을 화면 위에 다시 구축한다. 자유롭고 힘 있는 붓질, 뛰어난 드로잉 감각, 그리고 오랜 시간 축적해 온 색채 연구를 바탕으로 형태는 나타났다 사라지기를 반복하며 관찰과 기억 사이를 유영한다.

특히 권혜조 작업의 중심에는 색이 있다. 작가에게 색은 단순한 조형 요소가 아니라 경험을 저장하는 하나의 언어이다. 푸른색과 보랏빛, 연두와 분홍, 빛을 머금은 밝은 색조들은 풍경의 재현이 아니라 순간의 정서와 시간의 흔적을 담아낸다. 화면 위에서 색은 기억처럼 겹쳐지고 흩어지며 하나의 감각적 공간을 만들어낸다.

권혜조의 회화는 풍경을 보여주기보다 우리가 세상을 경험하는 방식을 이야기한다. 《SHIFT》는 관찰과 기억, 현재와 과거, 인식과 감정 사이를 끊임없이 이동하는 과정에 대한 기록이며, 빠르게 흘러가는 시간 속에서 쉽게 지나쳐 버리는 순간들을 다시 바라보게 한다.

SHIFT

There are moments we barely notice as they pass—a landscape seen through the window of a moving car, a change of light at the edge of our vision, or a fragment of color that disappears before we can fully recognize it. By the time we become aware of these moments, they have already begun to drift into memory.

Kwon Hye Jo's paintings begin from this quiet distance between seeing and remembering.

For many years, she has drawn inspiration from everyday landscapes, not to record a particular place, but to explore how experience remains within us after the image itself has faded. In her recent works, the landscape becomes increasingly fluid. Forms appear only briefly before dissolving into gesture, rhythm, and color, allowing perception itself to become the subject of the painting.

At the center of Kwon's practice is an ongoing study of color. Her notebooks and painted swatches reveal years of careful observation, testing, and refinement. Color is never applied instinctively; it is developed through sustained research until it carries the atmosphere, rhythm, and emotional weight of a remembered experience.

Her confident drawing and expressive brushwork give these paintings their distinctive energy. Gestures remain visible, layers shift across the surface, and forms hover between recognition and abstraction. Rather than describing a landscape, the paintings reconstruct the sensation of encountering one.

SHIFT reflects this continual movement—between observation and memory, presence and absence, image and feeling. In Kwon Hye Jo's work, painting becomes a place where fleeting perceptions are allowed to remain a little longer, and where color preserves what time inevitably carries away.

The Architecture of Color

Color is central to Kwon Hye Jo's practice. Long before a painting begins, she develops and records countless color relationships through an ongoing process of observation, testing, and revision. These studies form a visual archive of fleeting impressions gathered from landscape, light, and everyday experience. Through color, gesture, and memory, Kwon transforms passing moments into painterly spaces that exist between perception and recollection.
