Rediscover Vaule of Korean Traditional Music by International and Domestic students

- “Humanities for the Youth 2020” receiving registration to participate by June, 28th, turned into online to respond to the pandemic -

 

 

Hosted by the Korean Culture and Information Service (Director Kim Cheol-min, hereinafter KOCIS) of the Ministry of Culture Sports, and Tourism (Minister Park Yang-woo) and managed by Korea International Broadcasting Foundation(Arirang TV), “Humanities for the Youth 2020”* is launched for international students in Korea.

* 7th anniversary of this year, since 2014

 

Under the theme of “Review the old, Learn the new, OnGoJiSin(溫故知新)”, the project of this year has been launched with an aim of finding a new value of Korean traditional music(Korean classcial music/folk song). It is expected to provide an apportunity to facilitate the collaborations between international students in Korea and domestic students through the Korean humanities, since they will team up with together to find and develop new contents in both Korean traditional music and diverse cultural materials of the world. Furthermore, it will be a venue to widely showcase diverse forms of Korean traditional music and instrument as well as enhance understanding about the Korean culture to the world.

 

The 80 participants will be divided into 20 teams and choose subject and research direction freely during prior education period(orientation). After the project started in earnest, the KOCIS will conduct interim check and final presentation, awarding 19 million won in total to the six best team including one for grand prize and gold prize each, two for silver prize and bronze prize respectively.

 

In particular, to respond to the pandemic, the existing way of operation such as holding a group camp, would not be allowed. Instead, all process would be conducted in an untact form to follow the protocol of distancing in daily life, using screen during interim check and broadcasting online in real time during final presentation without audience.

The director Kim Cheol-min of KOCIS said “I hope the project can be a chance to vitalize depressed social atmosphere due to the pandemic, since it can be a venue for both international and domestic students to study and embroaden the understanding about the Korean traditional music”.
