- Part of the “Coming to My Town!” initiative, offering opportunities to enjoy diverse craft exhibitions in communities nationwide
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister CHAE Hwi-young, MCST) and the Korea Craft & Design Foundation (President KIM Kyung-bae, KCDF) will host the “Traveling Craft Masterpieces Exhibition,” a touring craft exhibition program, from July 2026 to February 2027.
To help close regional cultural gaps, the MCST operates the “Coming to My Town!” program, which supports the staging of popular performances and exhibitions across the region. This year, as part of the newly planned program, the “Traveling Craft Masterpieces Exhibition” brings craft exhibitions—previously concentrated in the capital area—to local regions, so people can enjoy them close to home.
Collaborative Exhibitions at 13 Regional Cultural Facilities, Featuring Four Curated Shows That Reflect Each Region’s Character
This year’s “Traveling Craft Masterpieces Exhibition” comprises four curated exhibitions that reflect the cultural and craft characteristics of four regions: Gangwon, Yeongnam, Chungcheong, and Honam–Jeju. Planned by four craft curators, the exhibitions bring together 104 craft artists from across the country, presenting more than 600 works. Each exhibition also showcases craft artists active in the respective region, capturing the distinctive character of local craft. Beginning with an official opening ceremony at the Cheonan Museum of Art on July 3 (Friday), the exhibitions will tour 13 venues nationwide—including national and public museums and art galleries as well as regional cultural spaces—to welcome visitors.
The Gangwon regional exhibition, “Homo Faber/Homo Sentiens: To Make, To Sense,” features 28 artists, including Gangwon State-designated intangible heritage holders YANG Yu-jin and KIM Byeong-uk, offering a sensory experience shaped by the qualities of the craft materials and exceptional craftsmanship. The exhibition will continue at Wonju Hakseong Gallery, Chuncheon National Museum, and Gangneung Arts Center.
The Yeongnam regional exhibition, “Yeongnam Yullyeo,” features 32 artists, including glass artist PARK Sung-hoon, winner of the Gold Prize at the 2023 Cheongju International Craft Competition. The exhibition interprets the sculptural beauty of craft, imbued with Yeongnam’s natural environment and local character, through “yullyeo,” the tonal system of Korean traditional music. It will be presented at DOMOHEON in Busan, followed by the Jinju Railroad Culture Park Vehicle Maintenance Depot and the Changwon Seongsan Art Hall.
The Chungcheong regional exhibition, “The Masterpieces of Korean Craft: Roots and Fruits,” features 16 artists, including “Craft of the Year Award” winners LEE Hun Chung, KOH Bo-hyung, HA Ji-hoon, and KIM Joon-yong, connecting contemporary and traditional craft to reveal new value in Korean craft. The exhibition will begin at the Cheonan Museum of Art, continue at the Onyang Folk Museum in Asan, and conclude at the Korean Craft Museum in Cheongju.
The Honam–Jeju regional exhibition, “Common Wealth,” features 28 artists, including National Intangible Heritage practitioner KIM Seung-woo, and highlights the cultural value and communal meaning of craft. The exhibition will be held in sequence at the Iksan National Museum, the Yeosu EXPO Convention Center, the Gwangju Institute of Design Promotion, and Art Space IAa in Jeju.
Detailed schedules, venues, and visitor information for each exhibition will be released in stages on the KCDF website (www.kcdf.or.kr), on its Instagram (@kcdf_insta), and through the information channels of the organizations that operate each venue.
