Gangwon 2024 Volunteer Group “Shine Crew” Leads Successful Hosting of Youth Olympic Games

The Minister of the Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) YU In Chon attended the launching ceremony of the “Shine Crew” volunteer group for the “2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games (Gangwon 2024),” a sports festival where youth from around the world fulfill their dreams and challenges. The Minister offered words of encouragement to the volunteers and participants, expressing hopes for a resounding success.

 

The volunteer ceremony was held at Seoul Olympic Parktel on Monday, December 4, 50 days before the Games (G-50, Nov 30). This event also saw the participation of Gangwon 2024 Organizing Committee President CHOI Jong Gu, Co-presidents JIN Jong Oh and LEE Sang Hwa, Korea Sports Promotion Foundation CEO CHO Hyun Jae, Gangwon State Governor KIM Jin Tae, the mayor and governor of the host city, and 50 volunteers selected by lottery, wholeheartedly showing their support for a successful event.

At this launch ceremony, Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (YOGOC) President CHOI Jong Gu appointed Pyeongchang county Mayor SHIM Jae Kook, Gangneung Mayor KIM Hong Gyu, Jeongseon county Mayor CHOI Seung Jun, and Hoengseong county Mayor KIM Myeong Gi, representing the host city, as honorary volunteer leaders, and Gangwon 2024 honorary ambassador PARK Jae Min and actor LEE Dong Wook as honorary volunteers, awarding them letters of appointment.

 

Then, honorary volunteer LEE Dong Wook and three other volunteers representing the male and female youth, read the oath containing the Olympic vision of coexistence and harmony on behalf of 2,030 volunteer members. The launch marked the official establishment of the Gangwon 2024 volunteer group “Shine Crew.”[1]

 

“Shine Crew” work locations assigned, full-scale activities to begin on January 16, 2024, after completing on-site training

 

The 2,030 volunteer group “Shine Crew” conducted requirements screening, interview screening, and basic training for 3,503 hopefuls who submitted online applications through recruitment notices in April and May (October 30 – November 19, 2023), with the final selection made on November 29 after an English proficiency test. They are assigned a work location and asked to complete job-specific field training from December to January before the start of full-scale activities in the four host cities from Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

 

Minister YU said, “Volunteers participating in ‘Gangwon 2024’ are the first to welcome the Olympic Games, a festival venue that aims for solidarity and cooperation, and are the most important players in hosting a successful event. I hope Gangwon 2024 volunteers take pride in their contributions, create valuable experiences, and cherish happy memories.”
