The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) hosts the “K-Content Expo in the United Kingdom 2023” at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London from July 24 (Mon) to 27 (Thur). The “K-Content Expo,” held since 2016, is a B2B-focused expo that markets K-Contents to key emerging and potential overseas markets and supports the expansion of export channels for domestic content companies.

Expectations for diversification of export markets with the expansion of the 2023 K-Contents Expo

This year, the MCST is actively opening up new content markets by increasing the number of K-Content Expos and expanding targeted regions. The K-Content Expo, which was held in Singapore and Spain last year, plans to widely spread the charm of K-Content in regions such as Europe, America, and the Middle East, starting with the UK, followed by the US and Mexico (Sept), Belgium and the United Arab Emirates (Nov).

Expanding the horizon of K-Content market in Europe with UK as the foothold

Conducting one-on-one business meetings, seminars, networking reception, etc.

Europe is a region where K-Content exports are rapidly increasing. According to a content industry survey, the amount of exports to Europe in 2021 increased by 36.8% from the previous year to USD 1.28 billion, nearly double the USD 688.49 million in 2019. The “K-Content Expo in the United Kingdom 2023” is expected to be an opportunity to aggressively expand the entry of K-Contents into Europe, as key buyers from emerging markets for K-Content exports, such as the UK, France, and Germany, are participating.

At the UK event, they will carry out one-on-one business meetings, seminars, investment attraction, and networking reception with the participation of 35 domestic content companies and around 60 buyers from Europe. On the first day of the event, July 24 (Mon), they plan to hold a seminar to expand the exchange of content industry and discuss the global market entry of K-Webtoons, the advent of the Over-The-Top (OTT) era, and the scalability of content intellectual property (IP).

On the second day, July 25 (Tue), they will conduct a networking reception with attendees including Korean content companies and invited overseas buyers. One-on-one business meetings will be done from July 25 (Tue) to July 27 (Thur), and they will finalize immediate Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements on-site for any contracts drafted during the meeting.

The MCST, as “K-Content Salesperson,” plans to actively support the overseas expansion of domestic content companies by further expanding the K-Contents Expo. Based on this, it is expected that the content export landscape, which has been focused on some Northeast Asian markets, will become diversified.
