KBS has launched “STATION X,” Korea’s first radio program hosted by an artificial intelligence DJ. Created using generative AI technology, the DJ – named Xenique – is portrayed as a K-pop enthusiast from another planet who wants to engage with Earthlings through radio. This innovative AI DJ not only hosts the show, but also contributes to song selection and scriptwriting, demonstrating the potential of AI in creative fields.

The name “Xenique” reflects the goal of producing original content – it’s a combination of the Greek words “xenos” (gift) and “genesis” (creation) as well as “unique.” KBS has partnered with NAVER Cloud to integrate advanced AI capabilities, which will enhance the interaction between the DJ and listeners. “STATION X” airs nightly from 1 a.m. to 2 a.m. on KBS Cool FM and is available on various platforms, including the KBS apps Kong and KBS+.

Listeners have responded with curiosity and excitement to this innovative show, which blends technology and traditional radio broadcasting. Xenique engages the audience in a personal way, bringing a fresh dynamic to the listening experience. Using voice recognition technology, Xenique can interact with listeners in real time, responding to requests and comments as if engaging in real human conversation. The goal here is to foster a deeper connection with listeners, making them feel more involved in the show.

The launch of Xenique has sparked a broader conversation about the future of radio and the media. Critics and enthusiasts alike are pondering the implications of AI-hosted programming and its potential impact on traditional broadcasting. Other shows experimenting with AI technologies include “Syncro U” and “Gone PD.”

The format of “STATION X” is particularly appealing to younger audiences, who are heavily engaged with digital platforms and crave novelty and interactivity. This initiative highlights the potential for collaboration between the media and technology sectors, positioning KBS as a forward-thinking company in the evolving media landscape.

As “STATION X” progresses, it will be interesting to see how it evolves based on listener feedback and technological advancements. The show’s success could spur further innovation in AI-powered broadcasting and content creation.

In essence, “STATION X” marks a significant milestone in Korea’s broadcasting history and serves as a bellwether. As audiences adapt to this new form of entertainment, the collaboration between AI and traditional media will likely inspire further experimentation and creativity, setting the stage for a new era of radio broadcasting. Xenique’s debut hints at the endless possibilities that arise when human creativity meets AI, potentially reshaping the future of media and entertainment.
