Global Illegal Distribution Stifling K-Content Growth to be Eradicated by Mobilizing International, Interagency, and Private Sectors

On August 1 (Tue), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST), together with the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Korea Communications Commission, and the Korean National Police Agency, announced measures to combat illegal K-content distribution, which is stifling K-content growth. The actions are a follow-up to President YOON Suk Yeol’s directive to prepare intergovernmental support measures to eradicate the illegal distribution of K-content and were prepared after a private-government-ruling party consultation on July 31 (Mon), based on discussions at a meeting related to illegal K-content distribution between government, ruling party and public and opinions from the content industry.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) hosts the “K-Content Expo in the United Kingdom 2023” at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in London from July 24 (Mon) to 27 (Thur). The “K-Content Expo,” held since 2016, is a B2B-focused expo that markets K-Contents to key emerging and potential overseas markets and supports the expansion of export channels for domestic content companies.

Aim to Attract One Million US Tourists: K-Tourism Marketing at New York’s Iconic Rockefeller Center

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) in collaboration with the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) held the “K-Tourism Roadshow” from July 19 (Wed) to 22 (Sat) at the Rockefeller Center and Times Square in New York. The “K-Tourism Roadshow” is an annual event to promote the allure of K-Tourism alongside K-Culture in anticipation of the “Visit Korea Year 2023–2024” (Visit Year) targeting 15 cities worldwide. The 11th roadshow was held in New York in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the ROK–US alliance. Especially noteworthy is the fact that this event was held at New York’s landmark, the Rockefeller Center, based on their co-hosting proposal, which further signifies the heightened interest in Korea in the United States.

Witnessing the History of K-Culture in Global Pop Culture

The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History (Director HAN Soo) presents “The Pop Culture We Loved and Rise of the Korean Wave” a special exhibition tracing the history of Korean Wave (Hallyu) within global pop culture. The exhibition runs from July 19 (Wed) to September 3 (Sun) in the special exhibition hall on the third floor.

K-beauty Attracting Foreign Tourists Visiting Korea

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister PARK Bo Gyoon, MCST) holds Korea Summer Beauty Sale from July 20 (Thur) to August 20 (Sun) with the Visit Korea Committee (Chairperson LEE Boo Jin, VKC). As a public–private partnership event with the K-Tourism Cooperation Group and K-beauty companies, “Korea Summer Beauty Sale” is a themed tourism festival offering special K-beauty promotions with products popular among foreign tourists and various K-beauty experience programs. JANG Mi Ran, the second vice minister of the MCST, visited Amore Seongsu, a K-beauty spot in Seoul, on July 20 (Thur), met industry officials, and discovered ways to revitalize K-tourism integrated with K-beauty. CEOs of K-beauty companies and around 20 industry representatives, such as LEE Sang Mok, president of Amorepacific Group, CHO Yoon Soo, president of Genie The Bottle, HAN Go Eun, an actress, and Risabae, a beauty content creator, joined this event.
